About Tom Schenk, owner of Chippewa River Custom Rod Company,
Tom began his journey into rod-building at just twelve years old. A devoted angler even then, it was only natural that he’d blend passion with purpose—crafting rods that matched his love for the water. For years, he fished relentlessly and honed his craft, until duty called and he served with honor in the U.S. Army Rangers, 3rd Battalion, from 1989 to 1993.
When he returned to St. Paul, MN, it wasn’t long before he was back to what he knew best—building rods and chasing fish. But city life didn’t quite fit. So in 2002, Tom packed up and headed north, eventually landing at the sacred meeting point of the Chippewa and Flambeau rivers, deep in the heart of musky country. There, surrounded by wild beauty and legendary waters, he found his place. He bought a small tavern, kept building rods, and never looked back.
Today, Tom pours his heart and soul into every custom rod he builds. It’s not just about aesthetics—it’s about precision, feel, and the stories these rods are destined to tell. Each one is handcrafted to the exact vision of the angler who commissions it. And when you finally grip a Chippewa River Custom Rod and make that first cast, you’ll feel it: the unmistakable difference between something that’s simply made… and something that’s truly crafted.
FAQs
Ha. I feel like you're leading the witness. In reality, "best" is a relative term based on each angler. But, when it comes to musky and fish of a lifetime there is no room for error and we trust these rods deeply. They don't break the bank and they handle the beatdown that musky fishing entails. Plus, you have an option for all styles of fishing from firing off a perfect double hauled buford as you float down a river (9ft 10wt) to hucking the biggest and baddest flies you can even imagine across the Great Lakes (9'10" Beast).
This is part of the DNA of musky fly fishing. Early on, it became obvious that we would never stand a chance with these fish with traditional fly gear. The conventional snake guides that you see on all other fly rods was one example. Heavy sinking fly line stripped 10,000 times through each guide wears them down quickly and can lead to line failure. I wish we didn't have personal experience with this, but we do, and now because of ceramic guides you don't have to worry about it. They can reduce line speed a little bit so if you would like you can now build a custom rod with us and have snake guides instead of ceramic guides.
Yes, we now offer fully custom cordura rod tubes with each rod, including the 2 piece rods!
This really varies based on which rod you are going with, what size fly, your casting stroke, and where you might be fishing. Feel free to call us at the shop for a more detailed answer.
Here are some overall grain windows:
10wt 9ft - 400-450 grains
10wt 10ft - 450-500
12wt 9ft - 500-700. Unless you are a full on crazy man like BamBam who likes 800 grains on it.
12wt 10ft - 500-800
THE BEAST - 700-800
We have a full online custom rod builder for the 4 piece, 2 piece, and 2 hand series. Pick your guides, grip, thread colors, and even personalize it if you'd like!
Most do! But in the deep dark arts of musky fly fishing there are no rules. Plus, the winn golf grips are extra freaking comfy for all that damn casting we have to do.
It is really up to you. The 4 piece rods are great, especially for anglers who travel more. The 2 piece rods are a little bit lighter and given they have less ferrules, have less moving parts to break.
Unfortunately, no. They are too expensive to make, ship, and warranty/repair. The 2 piece rods seem to hit all the benefits of the 1 piece while also offering more affordable shipping and the ability to break them down in your car/truck.
Each rod comes with a 3-year limited warranty on manufacturer's defects. Repairs are offered and charged based on the what is broken. Wear and tear from the abuse you give this rod catching all those muskies is not covered. If you choose to custom add snake guides and experience your line wearing them out, you will have to pay to cover the replacement (go with ceramic if you are worried). If the rod randomly breaks at the ferrule, its is probably because it was loose. We will still help you get it repaired but this is not a warranty issue.
This is so you know when you're ferrule is getting loose you can tighten it up before you break your rod. When the line is fully connected your ferrule is tight, when there is a gap between the lines it is loose.
